Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major explosions shaking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately offer further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a background of severely escalated strains in the region. Key developments leading up to this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of further talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed claims about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation is fluid, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
